Welcome to the website of Coastguard Hibiscus

Coastguard Hibiscus is a voluntary rescue unit coming under the umbrella of the New Zealand Coastguard Northern Region. Until recently, we had two dedicated Rescue Vessels. Hibiscus Rescue one was an 8.5 metre Rayglass Protector powered by two 150Hp Yamaha outboards. It was based at Gulf Harbour marina. After many years of hard coastguard service our main rescue vessel Hibiscus rescue 1 has been retired. Its replacement, a 9.5 m Naiad purpose built rescue vessel is currently under construction and will be entering service in the new year. Remaining in service is Hibuscus Rescue Two which is a 6.9 metre Sealegs based at Stanmore Bay. This vessel is the only one of its kind in New Zealand Coastguard. It has its own retractable wheels powered by an inboard Honda Motor and can drive straight into the water from our boatshed next to the Hibiscus Coast Boating Club.

The Coastguard Hibiscus team is made up of a dedicated group of local volunteers. The boats are taken out every weekend for training, and during this time the crew is available, as usual, to be tasked to incidents by the Coastguard Operations team in Auckland. You never know what you are going to end up doing or where you will be sent out to when you turn up for a duty on the boat, the day is always full of surprises! Read about us and gain some useful tips here in the local Hibiscus Matters column.

Want to CREW on Hibiscus Rescue vessels? NOW is your chance!

Are you semi-retired, have an understanding boss in the Gulf Harbour area or simply have plenty of spare time on your hands? WE ARE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER CREW for our rescue vessels based at Gulf Harbour and Stanmore Bay. We are primarily short of crew during weekdays for callouts between 6am and 6pm (you may be out after 6pm if there is a late afternoon callout). We will consider crew for other hours also. You need to live within 20 mins maximum of Gulf Harbour, ideally have some kind of boating experience, be able-bodied and willing to learn, and we will give you free training to become Coastguard Rescue Crew. Interested? Click here for further details.

Volunteers meet Tuesdays at 7.00pm and alternate between Gulf Harbour Yacht Club and the Hibiscus Coast Boating Club in Stanmore Bay, to discuss the previous week's events, organise crew for the following week and discuss other operational issues.
